The Story Behind the Song
The Story Behind “The Prayer You Never Heard”
This song is deeply personal to me.
Growing up, I wasn’t an easy kid for my mom. I got into trouble more times than I care to admit, made plenty of bad choices, and put her through things I didn’t fully understand at the time. Back then, I was stubborn, restless, and convinced I knew what I was doing.
But through every mistake, every hard season, and every time I wandered farther than I should have, my mom never stopped praying for me.
I didn’t hear most of those prayers. I didn’t see the nights she worried about me or know how many times she took my name to God when there was nothing else she could do. At the time, I probably didn’t even appreciate it.
It wasn’t until later in life that I began to understand what I had put her through and just how powerful her faithfulness had been.
Looking back now, I truly believe those prayers helped save me.
There were moments in my life when things could have gone very differently. Roads I could have stayed on. Choices that could have taken me somewhere I never came back from. And yet, somehow, God kept pulling me back.
That realization became the heart of “The Prayer You Never Heard.”
It’s about the prayers spoken quietly when no one else is listening. The prayers a mother whispers over her child long after that child thinks he no longer needs her. The prayers we may never know were prayed, but that God heard every word of.
And there’s another part of the story that means even more to me now.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve found myself becoming the one who prays for the people I love. Suddenly, I understand that old kitchen table a little differently. I understand what it means to carry someone’s name to God when you can’t fix everything for them yourself.
So this song is dedicated to my mom.
Mom, thank you for loving me when I made it difficult. Thank you for never giving up on me. And most of all, thank you for praying for me when I didn’t know enough to pray for myself.
Some of the prayers that change our lives are the ones we never hear.
But Heaven does.

Lyrics
There was a light on in the kitchen Long after I had gone to bed Mama sat there by the window With an old Bible open there I never knew the words she whispered Never saw the tears she cried I was young and running restless While she called my name to God at night I thought I made it on my own Through every road and every hurt But looking back, I finally see The power of the prayers I never heard There were prayers I never heard Spoken softly in the night Someone asking God to hold me When I wandered from the light Every time I should have fallen Every time somehow I turned Maybe Heaven moved around me Through the prayers I never heard Years went by and life got harder I learned how heavy worry gets There were nights I had no answers There were days I still regret But doors would open without warning Strength would come when mine was gone And somehow in the darkest valleys Something always pulled me on I called it luck, I called it timing Never knowing what occurred Until I learned somebody loved me Enough to pray those unseen words There were prayers I never heard Spoken softly in the night Someone asking God to hold me When I wandered from the light Every time I should have fallen Every time somehow I turned Maybe Heaven moved around me Through the prayers I never heard Now I sit here at the same old table With my own hands folded tight There’s a name upon my heart now That I carry every night Maybe they won’t ever know it Maybe they’ll think they made it through But I finally understand now What somebody did for me, I’ll do for you There are prayers you may not hear Spoken softly in the night I’ll be asking God to hold you When you wander from the light And if someday you look behind you At the bridges you have crossed I hope you see that God was with you Even when you thought you were lost There are prayers you may not hear But Heaven knows every word And someday you might thank God For the prayers you never heard So I’ll leave the light on in the kitchen And whisper your name to God tonight
