Behind the Song

The Story Behind the Song

“Wake Up, Justin!” was written as a playful family song for Justin, who has become a little too talented at sleeping the day away. Instead of just telling him to get out of bed, the song turns it into a full-blown anthem, encouraging him to call his friends, shoot some hoops at the park, play guitar, get outside, make some memories, and, if he is feeling especially ambitious, make breakfast for Dad. The teasing is all in good fun. At its heart, the song is about enjoying the day, getting moving, and not letting life pass by from underneath the blankets. With big singalong choruses, goofy spoken moments, and plenty of dad humor, this one was made to make Justin laugh while also giving him a little challenge: wake up and go do something fun.

Words

Lyrics

It’s almost noon, the sun’s been up
Dad’s on his second coffee cup
Birds are singing, neighbors mow
Justin’s still got nowhere to go

Phone on the pillow, blanket high
Sleeping like he worked all night
Meanwhile Saturday’s passing by
Somebody check if that boy’s alive

Come on, man, the world’s outside
There’s more to life than closing your eyes

Wake up, Justin, get outta that bed
Put some daylight on that sleepy head
Call your friends, go shoot some hoops
Do something crazy, put on your shoes

Wake up, Justin, rise and shine
You can sleep when you’re ninety-nine
Go make some memories, have some fun
Or make your dad some breakfast, son

Yeah, bacon and eggs would be number one
Wake up, Justin! The day’s begun

Basketball’s waiting at the park
You could be draining threes before dark
Grab that guitar, learn a tune
Do anything but sleep till noon

Ride your bike, go hit the gym
Text your buddies, go bother them
There’s a whole big world outside that room
And somehow you’re still hugging that pillow at two

Come on, man, we know you’re tired
But that mattress has officially retired

Wake up, Justin, get outta that bed
Put some daylight on that sleepy head
Call your friends, go shoot some hoops
Do something crazy, put on your shoes

Wake up, Justin, rise and shine
You can sleep when you’re ninety-nine
Go make some memories, have some fun
Or make your dad some breakfast, son

Yeah, bacon and eggs would be number one
Wake up, Justin! The day’s begun

Your pillow says, “Stay”
Your blanket says, “No”
Your dad says, “Buddy...
YOU GOTTA GO!”

There’s cereal downstairs
There’s life down the hall
At least get up long enough
To pretend you heard us call

Justin...
Justin...

Bro...

It’s afternoon.

WAKE UP, JUSTIN, GET OUTTA THAT BED
The whole dang day is almost dead
Grab a basketball, call your crew
There’s about a million things to do

Wake up, Justin, rise and shine
Quit treating bedtime like a full-time grind
Go chase the day, go have some fun
And make your dad some breakfast, son

Hash browns too, if you’re feeling strong
Then Dad might stop writing you wake-up songs

WAKE UP, JUSTIN!

Wake up, Justin...
Come on, man...

Seriously.

It’s lunchtime.
